So if you think your divorce is a slog, be thankful you are not an ultra Orthodox Jewess. (is that still OK to say, or is it insulting to female Jews?) Here’s what Jewish women have to go thru in order to get a divorce.
Under Jewish law a divorce is not finalized until a man gives a woman a ‘gett’, a 12 line letter written in Aramaic that declares her no longer bound to him. Three rabbis must sign off on it. That has led to a global scandal where abusive men leverage ‘getts’ for money and custody of children or withhold them to force chastity and singlehood on past partners. (The Economist)
Come on you Jewish guys! Divorce is an exhausting process as it is. Isn’t it time you updated Jewish law to recognize some equality between partners?
